Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nabinagar Power Generating Company Limited (NPGC) (Nabinagar, Bihar), a joint venture company formed by NTPC Limited (BSE:532555) (New Delhi) and Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB), plans to begin the 1,320-megwatt (MW) Phase II expansion of the Nabinagar super thermal power project in late 2014. The facility is in the village of Majhiyan, in the Aurangabad district of Bihar.
NPGC was incorporated in September 2008 to construct, operate and maintain a coal-based thermal power project with three 660-MW units, which will constitute Phase I of the project and will be commissioned by 2014-15. The cost of Phase I is estimated to be $2.86 billion.
To help meet anticipated power demand, Phase II will be set up at the same site and will consist of two 660-MW units. The total investment for Phase II is expected to be $1.99 billion. The complete project requires 2,832 acres of land, out of which 1,900 acres of private land has already been acquired by the government, which is in the process of acquiring the remaining 960 acres of government land.
The total power generated from both phases of this project will be 3,300 MW. As per the joint venture agreement between NPGC and BSEB, the state of Bihar will be supplied with 75% of the total generated capacity, and 7.5% of the generated power will be allocated to the central sector. The remainder will be distributed to other states in the eastern region. This state-of-the-art project has been given the status of a mega-project by the government of India.
NTPC has a current generation capacity of 33,194 MW and has a vision of reaching 75,000 MW of capacity in the next five years. Apart from this mega power project, NTPC has four power projects in the planning stage across the country that are based on super-critical technology and will each have two 660-MW units. These projects will be built at Mouda and Sholapur (both in Maharashtra), Meja (Uttar Pradesh) and Ragunanthpur (West Bengal). NTPC has made a commitment to the Indian government to complete these projects within a stipulated time period, for which it has resorted to bulk tendering.
