Sugar Land-March 30, 2006--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Right now, there are 41 units, representing 8,679-megawatts (MW) of potential new generation in various stages of development in the state of Ohio and scheduled to be commissioned between now and 2013. Of the total 8,679-megawatts under development, four projects totaling 2,054-megawatts are currently under construction.
One of the projects recently under construction is Biomass Energy LLC (Nicholasville, Kentucky), which is starting site preparation to renovate the 200-megawatt South Point biomass-to-energy plant in South Point, Ohio. Scheduled to be in service by the end of 2007, wood waste will be utilized at the baseload facility to generate electricity, it will become one of the largest biomass generating station in the U.S. A steam turbine/generator will be installed along with seven boilers at the former ethanol plant. Zachry Construction Corporation (San Antonio, Texas) will be providing engineering and construction services on the $288-million project, with Pace Global Energy Services LLC (Fairfax, Virginia) acting as the project consultant.
Construction is moving slowly at Dominion Energy Incorporateds (Richmond, Virginia) Dresden Energy Center (Dresden, Ohio). Construction initially started in 2001 on the 550-megawatt gas/oil plant, but was delayed in part because of the reduced demand for electricity. Construction has resumed on the $300-million plant that is projected for completion by next summer.
The 600-megawatt Lima Energy IGCC Power Plant has been under construction since last October with Industrial Construction Company (Brecksville, Ohio) as the prime contractor. Utilizing integrated gasification combined-cycle technology, project completion is expected at the end of 2008.
In addition to projects under construction in Ohio, about 5,000-megawatts worth of projects are in the early development and design stage. Possible construction by the end of this year is being evaluated at the $900-million Great Bend IGCC Power Station (Portland, Ohio), and mid 2007 at the 600-megawatt Lawrence Energy Center (Ironton, Ohio).
Committed to integrated gas combined-cycle (IGCC) technology, Baard Energy LLC (Vancouver, Washington) strengthens the belief that coal will be a lower emission energy source by planning to construct a $280-million Ashtabula IGCC Power Plant (Ashtabula, Ohio) in the spring of 2007. Rentech Incorporated (Denver, Colorado) is providing consultant service for the 250-megawatt station.
Uhrichsville, Ohio is one of numerous sites across the country being considered for the $1-billion FutureGen IGCC Power Station. The project will utilize a coal gasification process to achieve near zero emission, with construction aimed for 2009.
