FPL Energy (Juno Beach, Florida) the non-regulated power generation subsidiary of FPL Group (NYSE: FPL) started construction in May 2003, and is scheduled to start delivering power to Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) (Edmond, Oklahoma) from the first 51-megawatt (MW) phase of a new windfarm located just outside of Woodard, Oklahoma.
The first phase of the Woodard windfarm will consist of (34) 1.5MW General Electric (GE) wind turbine/generator sets and should be providing "Green Power" (environmentally friendly) to OMPA's grid by July 31, 2003.
The second phase is a mirror image of the first phase and is scheduled for construction kick-off this month and completion in September 2003 with power being sold to OG&E Electric Services a subsidiary of OGE Energy (NYSE: OGE) (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma). Ultimately, the plant will increase capacity up to 204MW, or two more 51MW phases over the next two-five years.
FPL Energy is the largest generator of electricity from wind turbines in the United States. The company currently owns and operates (28) wind farms in 10 states with more than 1,700MW of capacity. The company has announced projects representing nearly 600MW of new wind capacity that will be operational by the end of 2003 half of which are planned with (200) GE 1.5MW wind turbine/generators. Wind power represents approximately 24 percent of the company's portfolio, with more than 80 percent being fueled by renewable or clean-burning sources. It has more than 80 facilities, with nearly 7,300MW in operation. Its sister subsidiary, Florida Power & Light Company, FPL is among the largest and fastest growing electric utilities in the United States. As of December 2002, FPL had 9,612 employees serving nearly 8 million people, or about half the state of Florida. Power is delivered safely and reliably from 33 generating units.
