Oman to Develop National Electricity Transmission Grid
The Oman Electricity Transmission Company is the monopoly provider of power transmission services to Oman's main 220- and 132-kilovolt interconnected transmission system.
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Oman Electricity Transmission Company (OETC) is the monopoly provider of power transmission services to Oman's main interconnected system (MIS). OETC owns and operates the 220- and 132-kilovolt (kV) interconnected transmission system in the northern part of the country and, as system operator, connects the central power dispatch to the generating and desalination facilities that are part of the MIS.
OETC's grid has 686 kilometers of 220-kV transmission circuits, 2,838 kilometers of 132-kV transmission circuits, about 41 grid stations, and more than 10,000 installed transformers.
OETC is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Electricity Holding Company SAOC. It holds 99.99% of the shares, and the Ministry of Finance holds the remainder. This grid covers the evacuation of generated energy from new power stations that are worth an estimated $2 billion, including its desalination plant, which is one of five major ventures that the Omani government is pursuing to meet demand.
In September 2010, the government of Oman awarded a contract worth $83.4 million to build power transmission units in preparation for the construction of a 1,500-megawatt power plant to be built in Sur Industrial Estate, in the Sharqiya region.
The plant is planned to be build in two phases. The first phase has a capacity of 400 MW and will be commissioned by 2013. The second phase has a capacity of 1,100 MW and will be on line by the end of the 2014. The total estimated cost for the two phases is $1.8 billion.
