Ontario Nuclear Unit Offline Seven Days Early

Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) (Toronto, Ontario) Pickering Unit 04 tripped offline at approximately 5:00 a.m. Sunday morning, October 1, 2006, due to a leak in the Liquid Zone Controller System (LZCS) of the 540-megawatt (MW) Candu reactor. Due to the LZCS leak and the time it would take to make repairs, officials have decided to start the unit’s 70-day major turbine overhaul outage early. Siemens Power Generation, a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI ) has been awarded the contract to oversee the $15 million overhaul of the steam turbine.

The LZCS consists of approximately fourteen vertical tanks that contain light water stationed in the core area. The light water is used as an absorber of neutrons. Part of this water is continuously replaced through an automated valve and piping system.

Unit 04 returned to service in September 2003 after undergoing a six-year rehabilitation project that cost approximately $250 million to complete. In April 2005, Unit 04 was brought offline for 108 days due to a feed water tube issue, which took major engineering modifications to resolve.
