Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, located in Tiverton, Ontario, shut down Unit 3 Tuesday in an unplanned maintenance outage. The station is owned by Bruce Power LP.
The 825-megawatt (MW) Unit 3 was forced offline overnight following an excitation loss relay. Officials expect the unit to resume power by Wednesday afternoon, barring any further delays.
A loss of generator excitation during operation results in the machine speed increasing above the synchronous speed, which may cause severe damage to the generator.
The Bruce Nuclear Generating Station has four generating units that can generate a total of 3,304 MW when at full capacity. Units 1, 2 and 4 continue to operate at full load.
Bruce Power is a partnership among TransCanada Corporation (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta), Borealis Infrastructure (Toronto, Canada), The Power Workers' Union (Toronto) and the Society of Energy Professionals (Toronto).
