Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The City of Ottawa (Ottawa, Ontario) is planning to construct a $2.1 billion light-rail transit system in the Ontario city.

Plans are to construct a light-rail transit system that will include a 3.2-kilometer tunnel through downtown, which will be part of a 12-kilometer line from Tunney's Pasture to Blair Station. Thirteen stations are being planed along the route, including four underground stations serving downtown and the University of Ottawa. The provincial government approved a $600 million contribution to the rail system, allowing the city to start preliminary engineering for the proposed rail project.

Preliminary engineering will continue through the first quarter of 2012. Final approval from Canada's Federal Transit Administration is anticipated to be received by the spring of 2012, after which a design-build firm will be selected. Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2013, and overall completion is expected by the spring of 2019.

Capital Transit Partners, a joint venture chosen as the successful bidder to perform design work for the proposed rail system, includes engineering firms Morrison Hershfield (Burlington, Ontario), Jacobs Associates (San Francisco, California), STV Canada Consulting Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario) and URS Canada Incorporated (Thornhill, Ontario). The firms were chosen because of their extensive light-rail infrastructure and tunneling experience.

The purpose of the $2.1 billion light-rail transit project is to improve Ottawa's rapid transit network and provide needed rapid-transit capacity through the downtown area to alleviate existing bus congestion, accommodating forecast population and employment growth through 2031 and beyond.
