Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Houston, Texas). Owens Illinois Incorporated (NYSE: OI) has closed two plants; one in Milton, Ontario (Plant 2017349) and the other in Hayward, California (Plant 1057051). The 300,000 square feet Ontario location was permanently closed November 12, 2003 and has affected an estimated 150 people. The plant manufactured beer bottles and contained three glass bottling machines and one furnace.
The 394,000 square feet Hayward plant ceased operations in June 2003 because of a leak in their glass furnace. The company made the decision to permanently close the plant rather than spend the capital needed to rebuild the furnace for another campaign life. The plant was closed on November 17, 2003 and has affected 170 employees. The glass container products manufactured at the Hayward plant will be transferred to sister plants in Tracy, California (Plant 1011259) and Oakland, California (Plant 1014046). The equipment from both closed plants will be relocated to other U.S. plants.
