Palo Verde Nuclear Unit Remains De-Rated

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The Palo Verde Nuclear Station located in Tonopah, Arizona, which is owned by Arizona Public Service Company, a subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corporation (NYSE:PNW ), reduced power generation on the 1,317 MW Unit 03 on May 29 due to a condenser recirculation water leak.

Plant officials did confirm that they would not shut down the unit completely but instead would remain at 40% reduced capacity until the leak is located and repaired. A through analysis of why this leak occurred is also being investigated.

Plant officials believe the reason they have not been successful in locating the leak is because of its size. They did indicate that the smaller the leak the more difficult it is to locate. Unit 01 remains offline for a scheduled refueling outage and is expected back online in late June.

The Palo Verde Nuclear plant began operation in 1986. It has three generating units and a total capacity of 4,213 megawatts. Unit 02 is online and continues to run at full load.
