Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Construction of the 925-megawatt (MW) Westmoreland Power Station in Smithton, Pennsylvania, recently began. The project, which is owned by Tenaska Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska), awarded Black & Veatch (Overland Park, Kansas) the general contract. Black & Veatch will be responsible for hiring sub-contracts through the duration the project.
Construction on the project started earlier this month. It will utilize Mitsubishi's GAC turbine technology in a combined-cycle configuration to generate enough energy to power more than 900,000 homes. When completed, the Westmoreland Generating Station will be one of the cleanest and most efficient sources of capacity and energy in the Northeast Region of the country.
This project has a total investment of $780 million and is scheduled to be completed in January 2019. The station will employ more than 500 craft workers at the peak of construction and provide 30 permanent jobs for the area.
The facility is located in close proximity to an existing regional gas pipeline that will deliver clean-burning natural gas to the facility. The facility will connect via a short transmission line to the PJM Interconnection regional transmission organization to provide Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. residents with a reliable energy source.
