Pepperidge Farm Constructing New $72 Million Bakery In Connecticut

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Pepperidge Farm Incorporated (Norwalk, Connecticut), a division of Campbell Soup Company (NYSE: CPB) (Camden, New Jersey), is proceeding with construction of a new $72 million bakery project in Bloomfield, Connecticut.

The company broke ground on the state-of-the-art 265,000 square foot plant back in May of this year. The new bakery will replace a 55-year-old bakery located in Norwalk, Connecticut.

Suitt Construction (Greenville, South Carolina) has been selected as general contractor for the project.

Multiple automated baking ovens, production and packaging lines with robotics will be installed at the plant to produce bread, rolls, and stuffing products. Some 200 jobs will be created once the bakery is operational in the fall of 2003. Employees at the existing bakery will have an opportunity to work at the new bakery.

Pepperidge Farm originally discussed plans to retrofit and renovate the existing bakery, but the disruption of production would have substantially affected product delivery.

The corporate offices and staff of 320 will remain in Norwalk.

Campbell Soup Company is a global manufacturer and marketer of high quality soup, sauces, beverages, biscuits, confectionery, and prepared food products. The company has 24,000 employees worldwide and owns a portfolio of more than 20 market-leading businesses each with more than $100 million in sales.

Pepperidge Farms' Norwalk bakery opened in 1947 as its first full scale production facility. It is the oldest of eight manufacturing facilities the company operates in the U.S.
