Petrocel Approaching Startup Phase of $250 Million PTA Project in Mexico

(Tamaulipas, Mexico) scheduled a completion date of December 2006 for a PTA (purified terephthalic acid) unit expansion at its Altamira, Tamaulipas plant location. Construction began in early October 2005.

The engineering contract for the expansion was awarded to Uhde Jacobs Mexico S.A. de C.V. (Mexico, D.F.), while the construction contract was awarded to Pycopsa S.A. de C.V. (Tamaulipas, Mexico). Originally scheduled for completion in 2007, the PTA unit expansion will cost approximately $250 million dollars to construct. With the expansion and installation of key process equipment such as reactor vessels, distillation columns, absorbers and cooling tanks, the PTA production capacity will double increasing from 500,000 metric tons a year to 1,000,000 metric tons a year.

With an increase of this nature, Petrocel Temex Monterrey S.A. de C.V. foresees additional projects in the near future. Operations at the Altamira site began in 1974. Today the plant employs 500 workers and produces fabricated textile products including fibers, PTA, and DMT, which are the basic materials used in the polyester production chain.
