Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petroquimica Paulinia S.A. (PPSA) (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), a joint venture formed in 2005 by Braskem S.A. (NYSE:BAK) (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Petroquisa (Rio de Janeiro), is performing studies to determine the site where a new polyethylene plant will be located.
Petroquimica Paulinia S.A., which is 60% owned by Braskem and 40% by Petroquisa, is planning to invest about $100 million in the construction of a 350,000-metric-ton-per-year polyethylene plant. The site under consideration is Puerto Suarez, a city in the Santa Cruz Department, in eastern Bolivia. The construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2012 and to be completed in September 2013. The company also considered building a new ethylene cracking unit in the same site, but the project was cancelled due to market and economic reasons.
Petroquimica Paulinia S.A operates a modern and competitive industrial 350,000-metric-ton-per-year polyethylene refinery near Petrobras' Replan refinery in Sao Paulo state, Brazil, that started operations in April 2008. This petrochemical complex demanded a $411 million investment, and it processes from refinery gas supplied by Replan and Revap refineries, both in Sao Paulo state.
