Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Petroleum Oil and Gas Corporation of South Africa (PetroSA) has selected KBR Incorporated (NYSE:KBR) (Houston, Texas) to perform front-end engineering design (FEED) work for a proposed crude oil refinery in Coega, South Africa. The FEED work is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete. KBR completed a feasibility study for the project in May 2008. The capacity of the proposed refinery has grown from 200,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) to 400,000-450,000 BBL/d. The crude oil to feed the refinery will come from the Middle East and Nigeria to allow the company to meet local demand for refined products. PetroSA will select a company in 2010 to perform engineering, procurement and construction services. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and take about 48 months to complete.
PetroSA is a national oil company that was formed in January 2002. The organization has a unitary board appointed by the Minister of Minerals and Energy. The company owns, operates and manages the government's assets in the petroleum industry. In addition, PetroSA operates as an unlisted commercial entity under South African law.
