Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Reliance Industries Limited (BSE:500325) (Mumbai), the operator of the largest single-site refinery complex in the world and with a total refining capacity of 1.3 million barrels per day, has contracted with Phillips 66 (NYSE:PSX) (Houston, Texas) for its technology for the gasification plants at Jamnagar.
The planned gasification plants will use E-Gas gasification technology to process petroleum coke and coal into synthesis gas. The syngas will be used as a feedstock for a new chemical complex and will fuel the refinery's existing power generation units.
Philips 66 will license the E-Gas technology to Reliance and provide process engineering design and technical support relating to the gasification technology process area.
E-Gas technology has been used in commercial applications since 1987. It incorporates a unique gasification system design that can be applied with gas and steam turbine combined-cycle power generation to produce electric power as well as synthesis gas applications for the production of hydrogen chemicals, or substitute natural gas in highly flexible combinations.
The process is claimed to be among the cleanest and most efficient commercial technologies for coal- or petroleum coke-based electric power generation and syngas production, offering high system efficiencies, minimized water consumption, and very low emissions.
Rex Bennet, the president of specialties and business development at Phillips 66, said: "We look forward to this opportunity to work with Reliance on the largest gasification project in the world. Our E-Gas technology will be used to turn petcoke and coal into clean reliable energy for Reliance's refinery and petrochemical operations."
Phillips 66 is the newly constituted, standalone, downstream company created when ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) executed its strategy of separating its exploration and production and downstream activities. The change was effected this month.
