Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The seemingly unlimited applications for plastic and rubber products are driving domestic project development in the manufacturing sector, particularly for commercial packaging and piping, both of which are fueled by the growth of e-commerce. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.8 billion worth of plastic and rubber product-manufacturing projects across the U.S. and Canada that are set to begin construction in the first quarter, more than 80% of which is attributed to projects in Tennessee, Ohio and Georgia.

Polyethylene pipes and conduit are among the most common plastic products used in construction projects, for industries ranging from telecommunications to natural gas transmission. Dura-Line Corporation, a subsidiary of Orbia Advance Corporation SAB de CV (Mexico City, Mexico), is preparing to begin a $52 million revamp of its polyethylene conduit-manufacturing plant in Lubbock, Texas, which is to be located in the Lubbock Logistics Center II complex. The plant will cater to the telecommunications industry, which will use its product in the making of fiber-optic cables. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can read more in a detailed project report.

One Lubbock official told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that Dura-Line's revamp project "will enable the expansion of broadband connectivity to our rural communities in need, especially those in West Texas." Dura-Line's customers in the telecommunications industry include AT&T Incorporated (NYSE:T) (Dallas, Texas) and Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) (New York City, New York).

Soleno Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec) is preparing to begin construction on a $22 million high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe-manufacturing plant in Saratoga Springs, New York, which also will develop metal pipes. The company told the Albany Business Review the facility will focus on the production of large pipe, up to 48 inches in diameter, to be used in stormwater drainage systems. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.

The demand for plastic piping has spurred growth in ancillary sectors. Georg Fischer AG (Schaffhausen, Switzerland) is readying to kick off work on its $30 million pipe fitting-manufacturing plant in Shawnee, Oklahoma, which broke ground in November. The company also plans to relocate its gas meter-fabrication department to the new location, which will free up space at an existing facility in Oklahoma for the manufacturing of other plastic products. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.

The growth of e-commerce has bolstered the market for plastic packaging products, and manufacturers are responding with new and expanded facilities. Profile Films (Walker, Michigan), which specializes in the making of plastic bags, sheeting and tubing, is preparing to begin construction on a $55 million plastic film and sheet plant in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to produce recyclable products for the Food & Beverage Industry. Nelipak Healthcare Packaging (Cranston, Rhode Island) is preparing for an $11.8 million renovation of its flexible packaging facility in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to better cater to producers of healthcare goods. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Michigan and North Carolina projects.

Plastic projects account for the bulk of active investment set to kick off in the first quarter, but the rubber side of the sector is set to see two major projects begin work in the U.S. South: ECORE International (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) is preparing for a $10 million expansion of its flooring product-manufacturing plant in Ozark, Alabama, which will recycle old truck tires into interior-surfacing material, while Swami Compounding (Rome, Georgia) is looking to an $8 million renovation of its rubber-compounding plant in Rome, Georgia, which will treat raw rubber with chemicals to make customized products. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Alabama and Georgia projects.
