Planned Grassroot Chemical Start-ups on Target to Match Previous Years

There are 34 grassroot or brownfield plants planned to begin commercial operations in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) this year in the United States and Canada.

Released Wednesday, February 24, 2010

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--There are 34 grassroot or brownfield plants planned to begin commercial operations in the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) this year in the United States and Canada. These 34 plants will create over 1,400 permanent jobs, not including the manpower the construction industry is providing to complete these plants.

Industrial Info has tracked and identified approximately 30 new plants starting up annually in the CPI over the past five years. It seems that 2010 is on par to continue this trend, although delayed start-ups caused by the current economic climate of North America appears likely.

Depending on the outcome of the planned plant startup dates identified so far, the first half of the year is expected to have the majority of the completed grassroot and brownfield plants begin operations. The first and second quarters of the year each have 11 start-ups planned. The third and fourth quarters are expected to have half the amount with 6 each, totaling 12 for the second half of the year.

With seven plants scheduled to start up, the Great Lakes region, consisting of the states Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, has the most plants expected to start operations this year. One of these plants has been contributing to Industrial Info's database for years. Industrial Info first reported Mid-Wood Incorporated's (Bowling Green, Ohio) Portage Township grassroot fertilizer mixing plant in 1999. During the past decade, Mid-Wood continued to be optimistic that it would eventually break ground on the plant that would be used to consolidate two existing production facilities into one. Currently, Phase I of the plant consolidation is finally under construction. The facility is scheduled to start manufacturing dry fertilizer by the third quarter of 2010, after which it will begin construction of Phase II, which involves the production of liquid fertilizer.
