Plans for $6 Million Nanotech Center Joins Over $200 Million in Life Science Projects Rising on University of Pittsburgh Campus

Two other major life science projects are underway on the Pitt campus, with the largest being the Biomedical Science Tower 3 (BST3).

Released Friday, April 22, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas) The University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) continues to move ahead with its ongoing expansion of research facilities with the recent announcement of plans to build a nanofabrication facility. The $6 million, 4,000 square-foot building will be part of Pitt's Insititute of NanoScience and Engineering and will be located within Benedum Hall. Construction of the building, formerly known as the NanoScale Fabrication and Characterization Facility, is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2005.

Two other major life science projects are underway on the Pitt campus, with the largest being the Biomedical Science Tower 3 (BST3). As reported in Industrialinfo.com's Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database, the $200 million 10-story biomedical research facility is rising on Fifth Avenue and will be connected to adjoining university research facilities and UPMC clinical operations. The project is due to be complete later this year.

The BST3 is also the site of the construction of a $36 million Regional Biocontainment Laboratory. The Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory will be equipped to study a wide variety of exotic and potentially deadly viruses and bacteria, such as anthrax and dengue viruses. The lab was also designed to accommodate animal research, including primates, which are considered a necessity for experiments supporting vaccine development.

As discussed in Industrialinfo.com's *New - 2005 Pharmaceutical-Biotech Forecast, Pitt's construction activity is confirmation of the continuing strength of the trend of universities across the country to invest hundreds of millions of dollars to expand their research facilities.
