Plastic Pipe Manufacturer Awards Architect for New Kansas Plant

Viega North America (Bedford, Massachusetts) and its McPherson, Kansas based division, Vanguard Piping Systems Incorporated are currently working on plans to relocate headquarters from Bedford to Wichita, Kansas, and construct a new manufacturing and logistics center in McPherson.

Wichita, Kansas based McCluggage VanSickle & Perry Architects has been selected to complete design for the $50 million project. A general contractor is expected to be awarded in the next month or so, with construction beginning early next year. The company hopes to begin moving into the new plant in late 2007.

Current plans include the construction of a new $10 million, 75,000 square foot headquarters building on a 5-acre site, where both Viega NA and Vanguard Piping will be located. In addition to office space the new building will include a training center and a display area, showcasing Viega’s 12,000 products. Viega is also constructing a new training and seminar center in Nashua, New Hampshire in conjunction with a 200,000 square foot warehouse to support its New England customers. The company is also scouting locations for a regional warehouse in the West.

Over the past year Viega has acquired Vanguard Piping Systems and Midtec of America, an injection molding company. A new manufacturing and logistics center will be constructed in McPherson to consolidate manufacturing operations into one large facility. The new plant in McPherson will allow the once separate companies to be integrated into one location. Viega currently extrudes cross-linked polyethylene pipe and injection molds fittings at an 180,000 square foot plant in McPherson. The $40 million, 450,000 square foot building will be situated on a 106-acre parcel. The plant will increase from the current twelve extrusion lines and twelve molding machine operation to 30 of each. The company will refurbish some of the existing equipment to be used in the in the new plant.

Viega NA is a wholly owned subsidiary of Viega GmbH & Co. KG. Founded in 1899 in Attendorn, Germany, Viega provides plumbing and heating solutions to contractors. It is a family owned business, which employs more than 2,000 people worldwide and manufactures more than 12,000 products. In September of 2005, it acquired Vanguard Piping Systems and Midtec Incorporated of America both based in McPherson, which employ 300 people locally. The McPherson facility designs and manufactures proprietary water distribution systems, hydronic radiant heating systems and precision fittings. It is the leading seller of flexible plastic pipe in the United States plumbing market.
