Port of Long Beach Plans $75 Million Expansion

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Port of Long Beach (Long Beach, California) is planning a $75 million expansion of its port operations in Long Beach, California.

The Pier E Berths E24-E27 Slip 3 improvement project will involve two phases of construction. Phase 1 will involve the construction of a new wharf and include back land development and slip widening. Phase 2 will include dredging and will not occur until 2009. An environmental impact study (EIS) is currently underway. Upon final approval, an engineering firm will be selected in May 2006 to provide detailed engineering for the new wharf. A general contractor will be selected in May 2007 to provide construction services. It is anticipated that construction will begin in the fall of 2007, with overall completion slated for the fall of 2008.

The Port of Long Beach was founded in 1911 and is considered to be the United States' second busiest seaport and the world's twelfth busiest container cargo port. It is a leading gateway for trade between the United States and Asia, with East Asian trade accounting for more than 90% of the shipments through the port. It currently includes over 7,600 acres of wharves, state-of-the-art cargo terminals, roadways, rail yards and shipping channels. In 2003, the value of cargo through the port was $95.5 billion, and 4,658,124 twenty-foot-long cargo container units (TEU) moved through the port. Tonnage through the port was 65.3 million metric tons in 2003, which included petroleum coke, wastepaper, petroleum, steel, plastics, chemicals, sulfur, hay, cotton, fruit, and nuts.
