The Port of Long Beach was founded in 1911 and is considered to be the United States' second busiest seaport and the world's twelfth busiest container cargo port. It is a leading gateway for trade between the United States and Asia, with East Asian trade accounting for more than 90% of the shipments through the port. It currently includes over 7,600 acres of wharves, state-of-the-art cargo terminals, roadways, rail yards and shipping channels. In 2003, the value of cargo through the port was $95.5 billion, and 4,658,124 twenty-foot-long cargo container units (TEU) moved through the port. Tonnage through the port was 65.3 million metric tons in 2003, which included petroleum coke, wastepaper, petroleum, steel, plastics, chemicals, sulfur, hay, cotton, fruit, and nuts.
