Port of Los Angeles in Planning Stages for Over $200 Million Worth of Container Yard Redevelopment Projects

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Port of Los Angeles (Los Angeles, California) is in the preliminary design stage for over $200 million worth of container yard redevelopment projects in Los Angeles, California. Initial plans call for the redevelopment of berth 100 container yard and the TraPac (berth 140) container yard. Redevelopment plans include the relocation and addition of cargo handling equipment, the possible demolition and rebuilding of storage buildings, and the potential relocation and/or expansion of intermodal facilities at each container yard. The overall goal of the redevelopment projects will be an increased capacity and efficiency at the container yards.

Current plans call for design and environmental studies to continue into early 2005. An engineering firm and a general contractor should be selected in the Fall of 2005, with actual construction not beginning until Spring 2006.

The Port of Los Angeles is a department of the City of Los Angeles, sometimes referred to as the Los Angeles Harbor Department, and is governed by a five member Board of Harbor Commissioners. The Port of Los Angeles plays host to 27 major cargo terminals that handle automobiles, containers, dry bulk products, and liquid bulk products. The Port of Los Angeles is one of the top ten busiest ports in the world, with eight modern container facilities handling over five million units of container cargo each year.
