Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Portugal's 1-gigawatt thermoelectric power station in Setúbal entered the decommissioning phase for the plant's four units last year and is expected to be closed by 2012. The plant is owned by Energias de Portugal SA (OTC:EDPFY) (Lisbon, Portugal).
The facility is equipped with four 250-megawatt (MW) Alstom steam turbines, each of which is coupled with a 315-megavolt-ampere generator, also manufactured by Alstom. All units have a watertube boiler capable of producing about 1.5 million pounds of steam per hour. Operations began in 1979.
No maintenance is planned for any of Setúbal's four units, though the plant could be restarted in peak-load mode if necessary because of high demand or electricity supply shortages.
