Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Colorado boasts a range of industries with projects under construction. While the Power Industry takes the lead in project value with $1.5 billion worth of projects underway, other industries such as Metals & Minerals and Food & Beverage also make a strong showing. Industrial Info is tracking more than $4 billion worth of projects under construction in the state.

The Power Industry leads Colorado's projects largely because of a handful of utility-scale solar projects, some with accompanying battery energy storage systems (BESS). Leading the charge in this field is NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida), which is constructing two solar farms with BESS near Pueblo. The larger of these, the Neptune plant, will have a generating capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) with battery storage of 125 MW. The company's Thunder Wolf project will have a nameplate generating capacity 200 MW and a 100-MW BESS. Moss & Associates Construction Company LLC (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services on both projects, which are expected to be completed by the end of this year. While not as prominent as solar, wind power also features in Colorado's array of projects under construction. Examples include Leeward Renewable Energy LLC's (Dallas, Texas) Panorama Windfarm near Grover, about 100 miles northeast of Denver. The facility will use 41 3.5-MW wind turbines for a nameplate generating capacity of about 145 MW. Construction kicked off last summer, with White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) and Renewable Energy Systems Americas (Broomfield, Colorado) providing EPC services. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Subscribers can click here for the detailed report.
Another of Colorado's largest underway projects also is occurring in Pueblo, this time for the Metals & Minerals Industry, obtaining its power from a nearby solar facility. EVRAZ Group plc (London, England) is building a steel rail mill at a shuttered coke plant that was closed in the 1980s. While its corporate headquarters is in London, EVRAZ actually is a Russian company, and its largest shareholder, Roman Abramovich (who has close links to Vladimir Putin), had his assets frozen and a private jet seized after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Nevertheless, the project appears to be moving forward. Upon completion, which is planned early next year, the mill will produce 630,000 tons per year of steel rail in 100-meter lengths. The mill is powered by Lightsource bp's (London) 240-MW Bighorn solar facility, which according to local media, makes it the largest solar-powered steel production facility in the world. Golden, Colorado, is perhaps best known as the home of Coors beer, and the Molson Coors Beverage Company (NYSE:TAP) (Chicago, Illinois) is expanding its 13 million-barrel-per-year Golden brewery by constructing a 200,000-square-foot building addition, which will include new fermentation tanks, aging tanks and vessels as well as a new bottling line. The project kicked off in late 2020 and is expected to be completed in early 2024. Subscribers can click here for the report.
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the brewing behemoth is the Denver Beer Company (Denver, Colorado), which is underway with a grassroot brewery in Denver to produce 3,500 barrels per year that also will include an outdoor seating area. General contractor i2 Construction LLP (Parker, Colorado) kicked off construction earlier this year, and the project is expected to be completed by yearend.
