The industries with the biggest increases are Transmission, Power and Chemical Processing. The dramatic increase of spending is reflected in all industries except for Food & Beverage, Industrial Manufacturing and Petroleum Refining (HPI) industries. All industries with spending increases, except for Pulp, Paper & Wood and Pharmaceutical & Biotech industries, have total investment value gains of over 100%. Pulp, Paper & Wood and Pharmaceutical & Biotech had increases of 59% and 44%, respectively.

The biggest spender is the Power industry with 25 projects worth almost $3 billion scheduled to begin construction in the second quarter of this year. Leading the Power industry are the $940 million, 600-megawatt grassroot Longview Power Plant in Maidsville, West Virginia and a $648 million, 600-megawatt coal-fired Unit #4 addition at the Cross Generating Station in Pineville, South Carolina.

The Chemical and Pharmaceutical & Biotech industries follow with a forecast of $1.1 billion each to be spent on 26 and 17 projects in each industry, respectively. The Chemical Processing industry has the largest project, in terms of dollar amount, scheduled to kick off, which is; the U.S. Department of Energy’s proposed $1 billion salt waste processing facility in Aiken, South Carolina. The government-funded project has been in the works for some time now and conditions are looking favorable for proceeding with construction.

Although Industrial Manufacturing spending has decreased since this time last year, there are still 76 projects worth $1 billion projected to kick off in the second quarter. The largest being a $100 million automotive component manufacturing plant expansion and a $78.4 million power tool plant expansion.

Of the 186 projects, only 18% of them are maintenance-related leaving the bulk of the spending for capital-related construction. There are 23 grassroot plants scheduled to begin construction, meaning most of the projects are expansions, additions or upgrades, which includes environmental compliance projects.

The Mid-Atlantic region is home to over 3,400 plants employing almost 838,000 people. Most of that is in the Industrial Manufacturing industry having over 1,100 plants and over 400,000 people working in those plants. North Carolina is home to most of the plants with over 1,200 plants in the state.
