Proposed Ethanol Plant at Former Miller Brewery in New York Moving Forward

The venture recently received approval from the city's zoning board and all that remain for the project to come to fruition is getting enough funding and equity together to secure a loan for the estimated $140 million project.

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Plans to convert the former Miller Brewery in Fulton, New York into an ethanol plant are taking steps toward becoming a reality. Northeast Biofuels LLC (Syracuse, New York), a company formed by the owners of the business park, Riverview Business Park LLC, have made many attempts to attract an ethanol producer to the site and have decided to make a go of it on their own.

Once funding is secured, the owners will release their design-build contractor Lurgi PSI (Memphis, Tennessee) to complete engineering drawings and begin procuring equipment and selecting contractors to renovate and construct the plant.

Plans are to convert the brewery's 300,000 square foot brew house into an ethanol plant that will process some 40 million bushels of corn into 100 million gallons annually of the renewable fuel. This will create one of the largest plants of its type in the U.S. and the only fuel ethanol plant located in the Northeast.

In addition to the ethanol plant, Perdue Farms (Horsham, Pennsylvania) will lease some 17,000 square feet of building space from the owner, for a feed processing facility at the plant. BOC Gases (Murray Hill, New Jersey) will install a $10 million liquefaction plant on-site to capture the off-gas by-products from the fermentation process to provide CO2 gases for food & beverage companies.

Once the final plans have been approved, construction is scheduled to start in the Fall of this year, around September or October. The construction and renovations are expected take about 14-15 months to complete.

The Riverview business park developers were formed to lay the foundation to further develop some 523 acres of land and buildings located in Oswego County, New York. The development was built in 1976 and is located adjacent to NYS Route 481 with direct access to I-81 and I-90 and also has Conrail rail service directly into the facility. Miller closed the brewery back in 1994.
