Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Family-owned and operated H.E. Butt Grocery Company (San Antonio, Texas) is planning to construct a new regional dry grocery distribution center and truck/fleet maintenance center in Weslaco, Texas. All pre-construction activity has been completed and due to eleven inches of rain that fell in the area during September, construction has been delayed and footers and foundations for the building have yet to be poured.

Plans call for the construction of a 440,000 square-foot building with dry storage areas, storage racking, inventory control system, temperature air rotating cooling units, office area, multiple shipping and receiving docks plus a truck and fleet maintenance facility.

Rising fuel costs and facilities to better serve customers and stores in the region led the company to construct the new distribution center. The center will also allow the company to provide its customers with larger assortments, volumes and on-time service for the 50 stores located in the Rio Grande Valley and Corpus Christi areas.

The company selected Primus Builders, Incorporated (Woodstock, Georgia) as the general contractor for this $20 million project and construction is expected to continue once the site dries out.

Construction is expected to be completed by April of 2007, and the new center is estimated to create over 100 quality jobs. The site is located at 1000 Panther Drive in Weslaco where the city is also chipping in to improve roads and traffic control for the center.

H-E-B has established itself as one of the largest regional food retailers in the United States. It is still owned and operated by the H. E. Butt family. Since 1971, when Charles Butt became company president, the number of HEB Partners has grown over tenfold from 4,500 to over 56,000. H-E-B operates over 300 retail stores in 150 Texas communities with expansions into Mexico.
