Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Newfoundland Power, Incorporated, a subsidiary of Fortis, Incorporated (TSX:FTS) (Saint Johns, Newfoundland), has received capital approval for a $16.5 million upgrade at its Rattling Brook Hydroelectric Station near Norris Arm, Newfoundland. Ratting Brook became operational in 1958 and consists of two Allis Chalmers horizontal turbines, each with a Canadian General Electric 6.38-megawatt (MW) generator. Both of the units will be down during the upgrade that is to take place from May though November of 2007. The major portion of the upgrade is civil work to replace the penstocks and switchgear that, according to Newfoundland Power sources, has already been let. There are plans to let bids for new governors plus equipment to build new PLCs that Newfoundland Power plans to build in-house. The turbines and generators are in good shape and will receive normal inspections and repairs.
