Repsol Begins Major Maintenance Turnaround at La Coruna Refinery in Spain

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Repsol YPF (NYSE:REP) (Madrid, Spain) has started a planned 40-day turnaround at the 120,000-barrel-per day (BBL/d) La Coruna refinery in Spain on September 19. There are 19 units scheduled for maintenance, including a 19,000-BBL/d vacuum unit, 19,000-BBL/d delayed coker, 31,000-BBL/d cat feed hydrotreater and a 32,000-BBL/d cat cracker.

The units are in the refinery's conversion zone, which consists of four areas: hydrotreating, coking, cracking and power. The fluid catalytic cat cracker will be shut down first, followed by the unit's auxiliary units, including Gas Recovery 3, Vacuum 2, delayed coker, coke calcining system, cat feed hydrotreater and finally the auxiliary services. Cogeneration units 1 and 2 and the steam generator will be shut down last; however, they will resume operation first after the zone resumes operation at the end of October.

Production from the crude units will be curtailed during this time, and the crude slate will be lighter during the turnaround. Furthermore, La Coruna has scheduled a planned turnaround for the distillation zone for 2011. This zone includes Crude 1, Crude 2, Platformer 1, Platformer 2, Sulfur Recovery Unit 3, Merox (U-73), Vacuum 1, Vacuum 3 and Gas Recovery 2, among others.
