Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Although thermal coal used for power generation has declined significantly in the U.S. due to many coal-fired power plant closures, thermal coal exports from the U.S. to other parts of the world are picking up. Specifically, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) notes that in the first half of this year, thermal coal exports to Asia rose 19%, or 2.3 million short tons (MMst), compared with the same period of 2023. At the same time, thermal coal exports to Africa increased 60%, rising from 3.3 MMst in the first half of 2023 to 5.3 MMst in the first half of 2024. The increase in exports to these regions helped boost the U.S.' overall coal exports (both thermal and metallurgical) from 49 MMst in the first half of 2023 to 53 MMst in the first half of 2024.
India and China accounted for the largest shipments of U.S. thermal coal flowing to Asia. The EIA noted that India accounted for 57% of U.S. thermal coal exports to Asia in full-year 2023, largely led by customers in the brickmaking sector. Industrial Info is tracking more than 40 commercial brickworks and clay refractories in India. U.S. exports to China are driven largely by the country's power sector. Industrial Info is tracking more than 2,400 operational coal-fired power plants in China and more than 1,000 plants in other industries that use coal as their primary fuel source.
Of the 5.3 MMst of thermal coal shipped from the U.S. to Africa, 98% of this went to Egypt and Morocco. According to the EIA, thermal coal exports to Morocco were 1.4 MMst in the first half of 2023, rising to 2.8 MMst in the first half of this year, while Egypt saw a boost from 1.8 MMst to 2.4 MMst for the same periods. Demand in these countries was driven largely by the cement and brickmaking sectors, according the EIA. Industrial Info is tracking more than 50 operational brickworks and cement plants in the two countries.
With the increasing thermal coal exports, U.S. producers can perhaps breathe a sigh of relief as much of the Western world decreases its use of the fuel. Many of the expansions and improvements that Industrial Info is seeing at U.S. coal mines are at mines dedicated to thermal coal production. At the River View coal mine near Waverly, Kentucky, for example, Alliance Resource Partners LP (NASDAQ:ARLP) (Tulsa, Oklahoma), which claims to be the largest coal producer in the eastern U.S., is underway with construction of a 30,000-square-foot room-and-pillar facility in Henderson County, expanding on the facility's existing Union County footprint. The company says the project is needed to help meet increasing demand. Work began in the summer of 2023 and is expected to be completed early next year. Alliance also is expanding its preparation plant for thermal coal mined at its Madisonville Coal Mine in Kentucky, increasing its processing capabilities from 1,250 tons per hour to 1,400 tons per hour. The project is expected to be completed in the near future, after about a year of construction. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
CONSOL Energy Incorporated (NYSE:CEIX) (Canonsburg, Pennsylvania) is restarting a longwall operation at its existing Enlow Fork thermal coal mine in southwestern Pennsylvania. This segment of the mine was shuttered in 2020 due to low demand, but its recommencement will double the mine's production from the current 3.5 million tons per year to 7 million tons per year. Work is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
Industrial Info also is tracking the longwall moves at several thermal coal mines that ensure a mine maintains its existing production. Industrial Info is tracking more than 25 such projects for this year and next. For example, Alliance Resource subsidiary Mettiki Coal LLC (Davis, West Virginia) moves to a new longwall face at its underground Mountain View thermal coal mine in West Virginia every nine to 12 months as the current longwall face is depleted.
