Sanderson Farms Selects Site in Georgia for New $80 Million Poultry Processing Plant; General Contractor Identified

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The country's sixth largest poultry producer, Sanderson Farms Incorporated (NASDAQ: SAFM) (Laurel, Mississippi), has selected a location in Moultrie, Georgia as the site for a new $80 million poultry processing plant.

The company has been studying possible locations in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina and pulled the trigger on the Moultrie location, after careful consideration as to where the company would best be able to attract over 100 contract growers and a skilled labor pool for the plant that will employ over 1,700 people.

Plans are to construct an 180,000 square foot processing building and install slaughtering and processing equipment, with the capabilities of processing some 1.2 million birds per week into poultry products. A large wastewater treatment system will also be installed to handle the plant's large volumes of effluent.

The company selected Choate Construction (Atlanta, Georgia) as the general contractor for the project and the firm is currently on-site performing site work and pouring the foundation for the structure. The more than 300 acre site is located in Colquitt County in Southern Georgia about 50 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida.

The plant is on a fast track construction schedule and completion of the project is expected by August of 2005.

In nearby Adel, Georgia, the company will also build a new hatchery and feed mill complex to supply the new processing plant, with hatchlings and feed for the contract growers running the cost of the complex to over $90 million in total investment.

Sanderson Farms, Incorporated has been doing chicken right for over 50 years now. Going back two generations, a father and his two sons created this company on the foundation of hard work and family values. Today, the "family" comprises more than 8,300 employees and over 600 independent growers. They operate six plants in Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana, along with four feed mills and five hatcheries.
