Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Seward Generating Station, located in New Florence, Pennsylvania, shut down its 521-megawatt (MW), coal-fired Unit 1 because of cracks in the turbine blades. The station is owned by NRG Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas).
Plant sources said that the unit was taken offline after employees noticed minor vibrations. They continue to assess and analyze the issue, but based on preliminary findings, plant sources say that the unit will remain shuttered until November.
Turbine monitoring is a key part of day-to-day operations at a power plant. Some potential problems associated with vibration can result in cracked rotors and blades; bad bearings; damaged shafts; casing expansions; or speed, over-speed or zero-speed temperature issues. Plant officials use different devices and measurement techniques to monitor turbines during operational cycles for any such occurrences.
Seward Generating Station has one generating coal unit and a capacity of 521 MW when at full load.
NRG has diverse power-generating facilities with a total capacity of about 47,000 MW. The facilities are capable of supporting almost 40 million homes. Retail electricity providers include Reliant, Green Mountain Energy Company and Energy Plus, as well as a thermal energy division serving more than 2 million residential, business, commercial and industrial customers in 16 states.
