Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The country of Singapore, which is made up of a chain of seven islands, has been established as a port of trade and commerce since the 14th century. The British used the country as a halfway house to perform maintenance on their naval ships as well as a strategic defense point during their wars with the Dutch during the 18th century. Singapore was soon established as a free-trading station for merchants all over the world from Asia to the Middle East to the United States.
Once again, the British and Dutch are back in Singapore, but in a different form and for different reasons than the wars of the 1700s. Shell Eastern Chemicals, Limited (Singapore, Singapore), a division of Royal Dutch Shell, has selected Foster Wheeler Energy, Limited (Reading, England) as the engineering and construction manager for an ethylene oxide unit addition and a monoethylene glycol unit addition at Shells existing chemical site on Jurong Island in Singapore. The combined investment for the projects is approximately $800 million.
The ethylene oxide unit will utilize Shells Omega process technology and will have a production capacity of 750,000 metric tons a year. The monoethylene glycol unit will utilize Shells process technology and will also produce an estimated 750,000 metric tons a year. Construction is anticipated to begin by the end of this year and completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2009.
