Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Sithe Global Power, LLC (New York, New York) is developing ten power projects totaling 6,765 megawatts of proposed new generation. Five of the projects are in North America (4,215 megawatts) and the other five are in the Eastern Hemisphere (2,550 megawatts).

The projects in North America all utilize fossil fuels to operate the facilities. The two projects in Ontario, Canada, consist of the 875-megawatt (MW) Gore Way Station in Brampton and the 800 MW Southdown Station in Mississauga. Both will be combined cycle natural gas-fired facilities.

The three proposed projects in the United States are all coal-fired facilities. The project capacities and locations are as follows: the 1,500 MW Desert Rock Energy facility near Farmington, New Mexico, the 750 MW Toquop Energy facility near Mesquite, Nevada, and the 290 MW River Hill Power site in Karthaus Township, Pennsylvania. Both the Desert Rock and Toquop sites will utilize pulverized coal as the fuel base and the River Hill facility will use a circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boiler to burn waste coal.

The Eastern Hemisphere projects utilize three types of fuel: natural gas, coal/petroleum coke and hydroelectric to produce the proposed 2,550 megawatts of power. Sithe is part of a group building a 250 MW plant near Jinja, Uganda and reviewing plans for a 50 MW hydroelectric unit upstream from the Jinja site. In Boke, Guinea they are planning a 750 MW cogeneration plant utilizing three coal/petroleum coke CFB boilers., Two plants will utilize natural gas the 1,100 MW combined cycle Teramo Power Plant in Italy and the 400 MW simple cycle Ma’arib project near Sanaa, Republic of Yemen.
