South Hook LNG Awards Phase II E+P+C Contract for a UK LNG Receiving Terminal

South Hook LNG Terminal Company (South Hook) (Milford Haven, Wales, U.K.) has awarded Chicago Bridge & Iron Company (CB&I) (NYSE:CBI) (The Woodlands, Texas) the engineering, purchasing, and construction (E+P+C) contract for its Phase II expansion of the South Hook LNG terminal in Milford Haven, Wales. This $325 million Phase II contract comes on the heels of CB&Is winning the $750 million E+P+C contract for the Phase I of the project.

For Phase I, CB&I will construct an LNG receiving terminal with a regasification capacity of one billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) of natural gas. New facilities will include three 155,000 cubic meter (CM) LNG storage tanks, regasification facilities, and the refurbishment of an existing jetty. Site preparation for the first phase has begun, and the completion of Phase I is expected in late 2007, or early 2008.

The second phase will essentially double the regasification capacity of the South Hook TNG terminal, to a total of two Bcf/d of natural gas capacity. The scope of work for the E+P+C contract for Phase II includes two additional 155,000 CM LNG storage tanks, expansion of re-gasification facilities, and the refurbishment of a second birth to handle more LNG carriers. The Phase II expansion will be constructed concurrently with the Phase I project.
The South Hook LNG terminal will source its LNG from a natural gas liquefaction plant currently being constructed at Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar, and owned by Qatar Liquefied Gas Company Limited (II) (QatarGas II) (Doha, Qatar). The liquefaction plant under construction currently holds the title of the world's largest. South Hook LNG Terminal Company is a joint venture of Qatar Petroleum LNG Services QG Limited (Doha, Qatar) and ExxonMobil QatarGas II Terminal Company Limited, a business unit of ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas).
