Spain's Tajo de la Encantada Hydropower Plant Begins Seven-Month Unit Outage

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Major maintenance on Unit 2 of the 360-megawatt (MW) Tajo de la Encantada hydropower plant near Seville, Spain, began January 19. The unit will be disassembled for adjustments on the turbine and distributor, and controls will implemented on the regulation system and spherical valves.

Work is scheduled to last until August 2010, when the reconnection of the unit to the grid is expected to take place, plant officials told Industrial Info.

From May through December 2009, major maintenance was perfomed on Unit 4 of the facility. The work lasted 221 days and involved dismantling the turbine.

The Tajo de la Encantada hydropower plant began operations in 1977 and is equipped with four 90-MW Alstom Neyrpic vertical Francis reversible pumped-storage turbines. The facility, located in Malaga, Andalucia, is operated by Endesa Sevillana, a corporate group of Endesa SA (MCE:ELE) (Madrid, Spain). Through its affiliated companies, Endesa controls 39,656 MW of installed capacity, generating 149,830 gigawatt-hours.
