Steag AG and Joint Venture Partner Plan to Construct $940 Million 750-Megawatt Power Station in Germany

Construction is scheduled to begin around the end of December 2006 or early 2007, with commercial operation slated for first or second quarter 2010

Released Thursday, March 23, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Germany’s fifth largest electricity producer Steag AG (Frankfurt:DVD)(Essen, Germany) recently signed a joint venture partnership with Austria’s EVN AG (DE:878279)(Vienna, Austria) for the construction of a $940 million, 750-megawatt hard coal-fired power station. The power plant will be built adjacent to Steag’s existing 600-megawatt district heating power plant situated in the city of Duisburg, located in the northwest region of the country. Steag will own 51% of the project and EVN will own the remaining 49%. Steag also signed an agreement with the local EnBW (XETRA:EBK.DE) (Karlsruhe, Germany), one of Germany’s larger utility companies, to purchase the electricity output of the plant along with its partner EVN once it’s complete.

The power plant will consist of the most updated hard coal-fired environmental technology available in today’s market. It will be fitted with a sophisticated flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system that will utilize lime to filter sulfur dioxides out of the flue gas. It will also be fitted with a nitrogen oxide reduction (DeNox) system that will filter and convert harmful oxides into plain water and nitrogen plus a highly effective electrostatic precipitator that will help eliminate accumulated ash particles in the system. The new unit will contain a 590-foot tall efficient cooling tower that will handle higher steam pressures and temperatures for best utilization of steam for the 750-megawatt steam turbine. It will also consist of a highly effective air pollution control emission and monitoring system.

Construction is scheduled to begin around the end of December 2006 or early 2007, with commercial operation slated for first or second quarter 2010. Industrial Info will continue to monitor this power project as it goes through its various stages of development.
