Sterling Pulp Chemicals Limited (Toronto, Ontario) plans for the production of sodium chlorite at an existing pulp and paper mill owned by Bowater Incorporated and located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. This expansion consists of modifications and retrofits of existing equipment located at the mill. Acting as the general contractor, Sterling began construction for the new plant last fall and commissioning is planned for March 2003.

The pulp chemical division manufactures sodium chlorite, sodium chlorate, caustic soda, chlorine, calcium hypochlorite and hydrochloric acid. Sodium chlorite is an anti-microbial agent used for municipal water treatment and also disinfectants for fresh produce, and sodium chlorate is a bleaching agent used in pulp production. The company has served the pulp and paper industry since the early 1940's and the water treatment industry since the late 1980's.
