Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Privately held, Stop & Shop Supermarkets (Quincy, Massachusetts) is constructing a new massive 1.3 million square foot food distribution center in the small southern Massachusetts town of Freetown.
Structural steel for new grocery warehouse is currently being erected and flooring is being poured under the direction of general contractor Tippmann Construction Incorporated (Fort Wayne, Indiana) with hopes of having the building enclosed by October before unfavorable construction weather sets in.
The 135-acre site will be home to the company's new $103 million food distribution warehouse. It will replace an existing warehouse and allow the company to better serve and expand their 340 supermarkets located in the New England area.
The site also has room to accommodate an additional 200,000 square feet expansion that will be built when the new center begins reaching full capacity and warrants growth.
The center will have dry, cooler and freezer storage areas along with 200 loading docks and will also be outfitted with the latest technology in automated inventory control and order picking systems.
Completion of the project is scheduled for late 2004 or early 2005.
