Suncor Energy's Colorado Refinery Proceeds with Major Unit Upgrade

The modifications on the FCCU are planned to meet environmental regulations and to boost gasoline yields.

Released Monday, May 09, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Suncor Energy (U.S.A.) Incorporated, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Suncor Energy Incorporated, (NYSE:SU) (Calgary, British Columbia), has awarded Wyatt Field Service Company (Houston, Texas) a contract to perform capital upgrades and maintenance turnaround activities at the Denver, Colorado refinery. Wyatt's scope, valued at $3 million to $5 million, will be limited to construction and turnaround work on the Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (FCCU).

The modifications on the FCCU are planned to meet environmental regulations and to boost gasoline yields. The work includes installation of a third stage separator (TSS) to reduce particulate emissions, licensed from Shell Global Solutions and fabricated by Belco Technologies. Mustang Engineering LP provided engineering and procurement services for the replacement of regenerator cyclones, main air blower, and column internals in main column, which will boost gasoline yields produced from the unit. The overall total investment value (TIV) is approximately $20 million. Pre-turnaround work will begin this summer, with the majority of the activity scheduled for October, during the plant-wide turnaround.

Wyatt Field Service Company, founded in 1913, serves the refining and petrochemical industries as a heavy mechanical contractor. In 1985, it became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nooter Corporation, based in Saint Louis, Missouri.

Suncor Energy U.S.A. Incorporated acquired the refinery from ConocoPhillips in 2003. The $150 million acquisition included the following assets: a 62,000-barrel-per-day refinery, retail stations, primarily in the Denver area, and ownership in the Rocky Mountain and Centennial pipeline systems.
