Target Begins Site Work on $67.5 Million Distribution Center in Georgia

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has awarded Ryan Companies (Minneapolis, Minnesota) the general construction contract and is beginning site work for a proposed $67.5 million grassroot regional distribution center in Midway, Georgia.

The 1.5 million square foot facility will be used to support the distribution needs of Target's retail stores in the southeast part of the country. This state-of-the-art distribution center will house material handling systems, an automated storage retrieval system, and an inventory management system, ensuring that it will be able to efficiently handle the needs of the regional stores it will support.

Requests for quotations and subcontractor selection began in April, and actual building construction is anticipated to begin in June. The building should be completed near the end of the year, with equipment installation commencing shortly thereafter. The new regional distribution center will open its doors for business in the early summer of 2007.

Target Corporation opened its first retail store in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1902 under the name Goodfellows. The first Target store opened in Roseville, Minnesota, in 1962. Target operates 1,330 retail stores in 47 states, 141 SuperTarget stores in 21 states, 22 distribution centers, and three import warehouses. Target had revenues of over $1.8 billion in 2004 and employs over 270,000 people.
