Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--More than 60% of U.S. power-generation capacity installed in 2018 was fueled by natural gas, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Almost 90% of the gas-fired capacity added last year is attributed to natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) generators, widely considered the most efficient type. The growing demands on gas-fired power plants are certain to keep scheduled maintenance at the forefront of plant owners' concerns. Industrial Info is tracking about 140 maintenance-related projects at U.S. natural gas-fired units that are set to kick off in the second quarter.
Click on the image at right for a graph detailing the top 10 U.S. states for natural gas-fired maintenance kickoffs from April through June, by total investment value.
California is home to two of the highest-valued projects: Middle River Power II LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) NGCC Unit 1 at High Desert Power Station in Victorville, and Imperial Irrigation District's Unit 4 at El Centro Power Station in El Centro. The El Centro project had been slated to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2018, but was hit with delays. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the High Desert and El Centro projects.
Texas leads all other U.S. states in its project count and total investment value for second-quarter maintenance kickoffs at natural gas-fired plants, but its average project investment is among the lowest. Calpine Corporation (Houston, Texas) has two NGCC maintenance programs set to begin in April in the Lone Star State: three units at the Guadalupe Generating Station in New Braunfels and one unit at the Baytown Energy Center in Baytown.
The Guadalupe project covers a pair of a pair of combustion turbines and a steam turbine, all from General Electric (NYSE:GE), while the Baytown project covers three combustion turbines from Siemens and a steam turbine from Toshiba. The Guadalupe unit generates 542 MW, and the Baytown unit 776 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Guadalupe and Baytown projects.
Of the other 20 natural gas-fired maintenance projects in Texas next quarter, only three are valued at more than $1.5 million each. They are:
