Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The Brick Group (Rexdale, Ontario) is in the midst of constructing a $50 million distribution center in Mississauga, Ontario. The furniture retailer is expecting to complete the 800,000 square foot distribution center by the spring of 2006.
Giffels Associates Limited (Toronto, Ontario), a subsidiary of Ingenium Group (Toronto, Ontario), the project's general contractor began construction in September of 2004. Giffels was also in charge of locating the 50-acre site, facilitating it's rezoning from agricultural to industrial, and designing and optimizing the site and warehouse. As part of the financing negotiations, Giffels also acquired the existing distribution center.
The new distribution center on Kennedy Road at Marcove Road will replace an existing facility in Rexdale, Ontario. This will be The Brick's largest distribution center, almost doubling the existing 464,000 square feet at the Rexdale facility. The new larger distribution center is necessary to support The Brick's aggressive plans to double revenue to C$2 billion within the next five years. The facility is constructed to provide a 38-foot clear narrow aisle storage system to support the ever-increasing diverse inventory carried at the retail locations. The building and site are designed to support a future expansion of the building, which will ultimately be in excess of one million square feet.
The Brick Warehouse LP is Canadian-owned and operated. It opened its first store in Edmonton, Alberta, on September 1, 1971. The Brick Warehouse, or The Brick, got its name from a move into a "brick" building in 1975. That first location was 4500 square feet and had four employees. The Brick also operates retail stores, United Furniture Warehouse and HomeShow Canada. United Furniture Warehouse handles the entry-level/promotional segment, while HomeShow Canada will target the high end. The Brick stores offer mid-range/ mass-market price points. As of May 2004, The Brick operates over 80 locations with 5,000 employees in the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec.
The Brick also currently operates over one million square feet of distribution space among five distribution centers in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec.
