Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Three inland nuclear power projects--the Xianning nuclear power project, the Taohuajiang nuclear power project and the Pengze nuclear power project--are ready to begin in China by the end of 2010, according to Binghua Wang, chairman of the State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) (Beijing).
"SNTPC has prepared a set of standard designs," said Wang. "Adaptive adjustments will be made according to their site conditions, making them totally ready to begin construction by the end of this year."
The Xianning nuclear power project is located in Xianning city in central China's Hubei province. The project has a total planned capacity of four sets of AP1000-based nuclear power units, including two 1,250-megawatt (MW) units in Phase I. According to the approval of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), construction of the project will be carried out under the control of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Corporation (CGNPC) (Shenzhen, Guangdong). In July 2008, CGPC and Hubei Energy Group (Wuhan, Hubei) jointly established Hubei Nuclear Power Company Limited (Wuhan) to construct the project.
The Taohuajiang nuclear power project is located at Zhanxi Town of Taojiang County, Yiyang City in central China's Hunan province. According to the approval of the NDRC, the project is to be built and operated by Hunan Taohuajiang Nuclear Power Company Limited (HTNPC) (Yiyang, Hunan), a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing), with joint investment from China Resources Power Engineering Service Company Limited (Shenzhen), China Changjiang Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC) (Yichang, Hubei) and Hunan Xiangtou Holdings Group Company Limited (Changsha, Hunan). According to the planning, the project will be furnished with four 1,250-MW AP1000 nuclear power units.
The Pengze nuclear power project is located at Madang Town, Pengze county of Jiujiang city in central China's Jiangxi province. The project has a total planned capacity of 8,000 MW and will require an expected investment of $8.8 billion. Two AP1000 nuclear power units, each with a rated power of 1,250 MW, will be constructed in Phase I. According to the approval statement of the NDRC, the project is to be built under the control of China Power Investment Corporation (CPIC) (Beijing). In January 2008, CPIC Jiangxi Nuclear Power Company Limited (Nanchang) was established to be responsible for the construction and operation of the project.
The Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi provinces have suffered greatly from power shortages. Coal power currently accounts for about 70% of the total power consumption in China, but these three inland provinces are short of coal resources. Therefore, insiders believe the first batch of inland nuclear power projects will be built in these provinces. However, construction of these projects is subject to the final approval of the NDRC.
