Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Unit 2 of Sino-Russia Cooperative Tianwan Nuclear Power Station was synchronized successfully with the grid on May 14, 2007. This marks the near completion of the first phase of construction of the most advanced nuclear power station in China.

The Tianwan Nuclear Power Station is the largest technical and economic cooperative project between China and Russia so far. Construction of Unit 2 started on September 20, 2000. On March 16, 2007, the first loading of fuel material was carried out. The reactor achieved critical status the first time on May 1, 2007. Synchronization of Unit 2 happened after the completion of various electric tests as well as related preparation and after the approval of the National Nuclear Safety Administration.

According to the plan, power generation from Unit 2 will ramp up through tests of 50%, 75% and 100% of rated power and should be put into commercial operation at the end of this year. Not long ago, Unit 1 of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station reached full load.

The first phase of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station has two 1,060 MW units, Units 1 and 2, adopted with an AES-91 pressurized water reactor generating unit imported from Russia. The design safety is equivalent to advanced pressurized water reactors (the third generation nuclear power station) currently under development, and the performance is better than the most of pressurized water reactors currently operated in the world.

The Tianwan Nuclear Power Station plans to have four 1,000 MW level nuclear power units, with space reserved for additional four 1,000 MW level nuclear power units; the site is capable to of handling eight 1,000MW level nuclear power units. Annual power output is 60-70 billion kWh. Following the development in the national economy, the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station will be built into another large-scale nuclear power base in China.
