Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). It's been many years since the Toledo Ship Repair Company (Toledo, Ohio) has actually built a ship from the ground up, but company and local elected officials are hoping to change that. The Toledo Lucas County Port Authority is in the midst of assembling $10 million of federal, state, and Luca County funding to restore shipbuilding to the Toledo Ship Repair Company yard.

The project would involve the demolition of a 50,000 square foot building, the construction of a new building of the same size, new paint lines, a new dry dock plus supporting shipbuilding equipment. The new shipyard would be capable of building ships ranging in size from 50ft and 250ft in length, the perfect size for the Coast Guard's rapid-response boats, a contract that Manitowoc Marine Group, Toledo Ship Repair Company's parent company, is trying to secure.

Current plans call for construction of the ship yard expansion project to begin in early 2004, pending funding approvals, with the ship yard being operational by early 2005.

The Toledo Ship Repair Company is a subsidiary of Manitowoc Marine Group. Specializing in hull, machinery and propulsion repairs, along with conversion and retrofitting for the marine industry in the Great Lakes, they have multiple dry-dock's for emergency repairs and required surveys. The Toledo Ship Repair Company boasts a full-service fabrication shop, machine shop, propeller shop, portable machining capabilities, an electrical division, topside repairs, sand blasting and painting, plus full engineering, procurement, expediting and project management services.
