Top 10 Industrial Manufacturing States Play Host to 72% of $101 Billion in Active Projects

Released Wednesday, March 29, 2006

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The Industrial Manufacturing Industry is noted for its diversity, covering a large and wide variety of vertical industry markets, ranging from automotive to textiles to semiconductors to fabricated metal products. Currently, Industrialinfo.com is tracking 1,999 active projects worth in excess of $101 billion within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. Of this incredible amount of active project spending, just over 72% ($73 billion or 631 active projects) will be focused in ten states: California, Texas, New Jersey, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Louisiana, Minnesota and Arizona.

California is the frontrunner, in terms of total spending, with over $31 billion in active projects on the books. However, California only ranks third in number of projects at 75. California’s environmentally conscious laws have prompted massive investment in light rail and commuter rail projects in the state in the last ten years. These type of projects come with a heavy dollar tag, thus the bulk of the money associated with the future spending in California within the Industrial Manufacturing industry is associated with rail projects. The proposed $25 billion grassroot high-speed rail system will be key to California’s spending within the next few years.

Texas, our second-ranked state in terms of dollars, is currently developing over $8.4 billion worth of project work and is in first place when it comes to total projects with 157. A number of semiconductor-related projects are currently either close to construction or are in the planning stage for the state, helping to boost its future spending numbers. Austin, Texas has become the hub of this type of activity in the state and some examples of the semiconductor-related spending in the Austin area are the proposed $3.5 billion grassroot semiconductor manufacturing plant and the proposed $1.5 billion grassroot semiconductor R&D facility.

New Jersey comes in third in spending at $6.5 billion, and much like California, this spending is driven by the light and commuter rail industries. New Jersey is one of the busiest states in terms of light and commuter rail projects, and has been for several years. An example of the light and commuter rail projects the state of New Jersey expects to begin construction on in the near future is the proposed $4.5-6 billion ARC (access to the region core) rail expansion.

The states of Georgia and Pennsylvania are each actively developing over $5 billion worth of projects and come in 2nd and 4th place, respectively, in terms of number of active projects. A pair of proposed high-speed maglev projects highlights the active project spending for these two states, $1.9 billion in Georgia and $3 billion in Pennsylvania.

Rounding out the top 10 spending states within the Industrial Manufacturing industry are Maryland (21 projects worth $4.9 billion), Virginia (69 projects worth $3.9 billion), Louisiana (30 projects worth $2.8 billion), Minnesota (48 projects worth $2.1 billion) and Arizona (15 projects worth $2.1 billion). Some examples of the significant project spending in these states would be the proposed $4 billion high-speed maglev project in Maryland, the proposed $1.8 billion Dulles Metrorail corridor project phase I in Virginia, and the proposed $2 billion Fab 22 semiconductor plant renovation/expansion in Arizona.

Even though the high spending numbers for the majority of these states are focused around either light rail, commuter rail or semiconductor-related projects, there are still a myriad of projects outside of these areas that are being developed for these top 10 states as well as the balance of the states in the United States. Billions of dollars worth of projects will move from the planning stage to the construction stage within the next 12-24 months within these states, and as they do, the top 10 spending states will be adjusted accordingly as Industrialinfo.com continues to track this significant project spending.
