Turnarounds at German OMV Burghausen Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 70,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Burghausen Refinery, operated by Austrian oil and gas group OMV AG (NASDAQ:OMVKY) (Vienna) and located in the Bavarian city of Burghausen, will undergo a maintenance turnaround in September 2013. The long-term service for the shutdown is provided by ThyssenKrupp AG (Dusseldorf, Germany), ERMO Industriemontagen Reuner GmbH (Mainhausen, Germany) and MCE Industrietechnik (Linz, Austria).

According to European legislation, refineries should perform turnarounds approximately every five years. Burghausen Refinery had its last turnaround in 2007. The shutdown took place from October 7 to November 13, 2007, and was aimed at the expansion of the petrochemical area, which is directly connected to the plant and led by the international provider of plastics Borealis AG (Vienna) and OMV. After completion of the expansion, the refinery became the ninth-largest polyolefin site and the third-largest polypropylene site in Europe. During the expansion project, OMV invested 840 million euros to increase the petrochemical production capacity at the Burghausen Refinery, and Borealis invested an additional 200 million euros.

A new metathesis plant, the first of its kind in Europe, was successfully integrated into the refinery system within a short period of time. Additionally, an expansion of the ethylene plant and a major cracker furnace were also performed during the overhaul. The new facilities increased the refinery's production of ethylene from 2,200 to 9,000 BBL/d; propylene from 6,300 to 11,200 BBL/d; and polypropylene from 6,600 to 11,400 BBL/d. This last expansion of the polypropylene capacities was aimed at supplying the growing demand for advanced packaging products and medical applications.
