Typhoon Mawar Leaves Battered Guam Without Power

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Most of Guam was without power on Thursday after Typhoon Mawar battered the U.S. island territory with the force of a Category 4 hurricane, according to news accounts. The storm has since strengthened as it headed into western waters, packing winds of 175 miles per hour.

The eye of the typhoon passed just north of Guam on Wednesday, slamming the island with powerful wind and heavy rain. A typhoon warning for the island was lifted on Thursday.

According to news accounts, the Guam Power Authority said only 2% of its customers had power. Only one plant on the island was functioning; it was serving Andersen Air Force Base, Camp Blaz Marine Base and a small portion of Dededo village. Only 1,000 of Guam Power Authority's 52,000 customers still had electricity, according to CNN.

The Guam Power Authority was working to restore power.

Mawar continued to move northwest toward the northern Philippines and Taiwan.
