Uncle Sam Boosts Midwest's Investment in Pharma-Biotech Construction Starts to $1.6 Billion in Second-Quarter 2015

Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As a rule, the U.S. Midwest region does not usually lead in life-science spending in any given quarter. But thanks to Uncle Sam, the region, which comprises Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska and South Dakota, can boast a $1.6 billion total investment value for 22 capital and maintenance (MRO) project kick-offs during the second quarter of 2015.

The majority of the $1.6 billion is allocated for the $1.25 billion National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility (NBAF) in Manhattan, Kansas. Operating under a partnership between the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Animal Research Service (ARS), the NBAF will be filled with elaborate laboratories ranging in biosafety levels (BSL) 1 through 4.

The largest commercial project in the region for the quarter is the $66 million plan by the Cambrex Corporation (NYSE:CBM) (East Rutherford, New Jersey) to further expand its active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) contract manufacturing (CMO) plant in Charles City, Iowa. The company recently competed another expansion at the same site in 2013.

The remaining second-quarter 2015 projects in the Midwest are scattered throughout various states, as seen in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical & Biotech Online Database. The projects range from $1 million for scheduled maintenance programs to a $65 million university research center project.

From a dollar standpoint, the second-quarter 2015 spending on project launches in the Midwest is almost triple that of second-quarter 2014. This time last year, the industry kicked-off the same number of projects, 22, but with a tally of $730 billion. The main reason for the boost is the aforementioned federal lab project.
