Marshall's Unit 4 was taken off-line for a planned minor inspection in April. The outage was expected to last two weeks, but plant officials said that the unit remains offline for extensive repairs after the discovery of a fault, which caused the generator to ground out and the rotor to fail. Officials said workers were repacking and stacking all wiring and controls, and the rotor has been sent offsite for repairs.
Problems with the generators could stem from wear and tear on the equipment, such as switch gears, expansion joints wiring and rotors; and from heat-related exhaust issues that may affect temperatures.
Plant sources said they are still evaluating and analyzing the unit, but added that it will not return online before the end of the year.
The Marshall Station has four generating units, with a capacity of 2,000 MW when at full load. Units 3, 2 and 1 continue to operate online at full capacity.
